November Book of the Month: Thanksgiving Treat

Miss Vickie's Choice will appear every month on our blog. She will review a children's book every month. Parents, you may want to check your local library so you can read her pick to your child. Teachers, this book will fit into your lesson plans and help you accomplish the Early Learning Standards set by the Illinois State Board of Education.

Thanksgiving Treat written and illustrated by Catherine Stock

Evryone is busy preparing for Thanksgiving at Grandma and Grandpa's house. Grandma is busy stuffing the turkey, the girls are peeling potatoes, and the aunts are making pumpkin pies. The storyteller is always in the way and he resorts to picking up the chestnuts that Grandpa is knocking out of the tree with his cane.
The watercolor illustrations reflect the fall season with colorful leaves on the trees and seasonal vegetables. Grandma's house is warm and cozy and outdoor scenes feel like a day in the country.
Vocabulary: shucking corn, veranda, splinters, chestnuts
State Goals: 1, 18, 32
